Time and Social media

Social media at the expense of productive time.

I came across the illustration above on Twitter. I don’t know what information the illustrator intended to pass. But curiosity made me to dive deeper to give it a meaning that I felt would be helpful sharing with amazing people like you. Social media at the expense of productive time came into mind. When you give it a critical analysis, you can see a man at the top right corner trimming a tree, and the other on the middle top mowing the compound, a few looking around doing nothing at all, while the majority are so busy on their phones. We have gotten so busy with social media instead of doing things that are truly productive and fulfilling. People spend a lot of time on Facebook, Twitter WhatsApp, and other non social media activities like watching Netflix or playing computer games. It’s a good thing, but we need to balance with activities that will enable us grow at the end of the day, and live the life we have always dreamt of. Relationships are, and becoming fragile day by day. Have you asked yourself for once, why you keep losing the enthusiasm for the relationships, friendships that were once the source of our joy and fulfillment? We no longer give time to spend with loved ones, no more deep conversations with those we truly value. We barely know our friends, family, partners, and even God as we should. Why? Because we are so busy with our phones. Most people no longer experience genuine happiness as before their exposure into social media. We have lost a great deal in establishing deeper connections with those around us; an ingredient to life fulfillment. We are losing so much time that we could use to build our talents, starting that side hustle we have always thought of establishing, going to the gym for a healthy lifestyle, reading or writing an amazing book, pursuing our dreams, learning new skills, or hobbies. It is so common among students at campus. When you run into students randomly at a University, you would be surprised to find that more than 5 students out of 10 are on their phones while walking, in class, at the teen, or anywhere. It’s good if we are doing things that truly add value into our lives. It could be doing research, listening to podcasts, blogging, reading life enhancing magazines, among others. Ofcourse I am not against using social media, but spending too much time on it. Some people make a living out of it. It’s a source of employment for the influencers, marketers, e-commerce traders and the more they spend time on it, the more figures they generate. How about the other population? It’s a good source of entertainment, and connecting with others, but should not take all our time. Therefore let’s use social media but not at the expense of productive time. There is more to life than social media.
