In the words of the great Dale Carnegie, “History sparkles with amusing examples of famous people struggling for a feeling of importance. Even George Washington wanted to be called His Mightiness, the president,of the United States, and Columbus pleaded for the title; Admiral of the Ocean and Viceroy of India. Catherine the Great refused to open letters that were not addressed to ‘Her Imperial Magesty’, and Mrs. Lincoln, in the White House, turned upon Mrs.Grant like a tigress and shouted, ‘How dare you be seated in my presence until I invite you!”
People want to feel important and are willing to go to any length to get that importance and fortunately, the individual who can master the art of fulfilling that desire has the key to unlock an ocean of possibilities in business.
What are the needs of your business? They could be a need to secure a funding, or get a partnership, to retain or attract the top talent in your organization, to increase sales and profits by attracting more customers and winning their loyalty, enhancing relations within the organization, increasing productivity within your firm, or any other goal. The key is to win the cooperation of other players in the game by making them feel important.
In the case of employees who are the most important assets of any entity, leaders should create a better work-life balance, psychological safety, empathy, training to learn new skills and a planned-out career progression.
Employees want to enjoy autonomy and freedom to decide for themselves where, how, and when they can do their best work.
Such an empowerment make them feel valued as part of the organization and its vision, it adds meaning and a sense of purpose to their lives and will do anything to keep alive this feeling of importance by working hard towards attaining the goals and objectives of the organization.
It’s important though to learn how different people in the organization attain their sense of importance. What works for an individual might not be the case with another.
