A lot of people do not understand the power of creating a personal budget. They never make a plan on how they should spend and be in control of their finances and it’s one of the mistakes that keep a lot of people in debts, stagnation, and helplessness.

Budgeting is a great tool for tracking your income and expenses, and helps you make better day to day financial decisions.

It’s one of the most fundamental steps you can take towards attaining financial security if done the right way. However, creating a budget is not enough – sticking to it is important as well

Here are few steps to help you in creating your personal budget and stick to it.

Get to know your income. This involves having a clear understanding of your inflows or income streams. Start by calculating your total income, which includes your salary, side hustles, transfer payments, bonuses, and any other sources of income.

List your expenses: Anothe crucial step is to make a list of all your monthly expenses, including rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries, transportation, Education, Hobby, Vacation, entertainment, and any other bills you pay regularly.

A simple breakdown of expenses to consider.

Categorize your expenses: Categorize your expenses into essential (such as rent, utilities, and groceries) and non-essential (such as entertainment and dining out).

Set financial goals: Why are you even budgeting in the first place? This question helps you to determine your financial goals, such as saving for a down payment on a house, paying off debt, or building an emergency fund, saving for a vacation, shopping your favorite accessories, saving for upcoming events, among other reasons. You always need to have a reason for creating a personal budget to give you a reason for sticking to it.

Allocate your income: Allocate your income towards your essential expenses first, then towards your financial goals. Finally, allocate any remaining funds towards your non-essential expenses.

Track your spending: this can be done using a budgeting app or spreadsheet to track your spending and its important to make sure you’re staying within your budget. This require a high level of discipline that you can develop over time in your journey towards financial security. It’s going to be difficult, but trust me, you can make it.

Adjust your budget as needed: To have an effective budgeting lifestyle, there is need to become flexible with your budget and this can be done by reviewing your budget regularly and making adjustments as needed. For example, if you find that you’re overspending on non-essential expenses, you may need to cut back in that category to stay within your budget.

Stay motivated: Finally, stay motivated by reminding yourself of your financial goals and the benefits of sticking to your budget. Consider creating a vision board or setting up a reward system to help you stay on track.
